![]() THE BUCCINTORO AT THE ARSENALE
According to tradition, in 1104
the Doge Ordelafo Falier founded the Arsenal on two twin islands, the “Zimole”
in the area of Lago di San Daniele. However, only at the beginning of the
1200s the first documents on the great public yard appeared; it developed
over the years up to occupying a sixth of the entire urban area of Venice.
The “Casa de l’Arsenal” (House of the Arsenal) had been for centuries the largest factory in the world: in the 1600s it occupied an area of 25 hectares and up to 16,000 men worked there. The Arsenal was a shipyard, producer of the complete cycle of naval supplies, from the cordages to the sail lofts, from the armaments to the ship’s biscuits (the famous “pan biscoto” from a very secret recipe), factory and depot of every type of cold steel, firearm, and of any ammunition, naval engineering and military Engineer Corps study and school. The Arsenal was not only “fortress, rampart” of the Most Serene Republic of Venice, hon-our and pride of the Venetian State, but also “Officina delle meraviglie” (Workshop of Wonders), “Eighth wonder of the world”, the most sought out destination of famous travellers and royal guests that spread and widened its fame, thus favouring the clever propagandistic action wanted by Venice. A real city within the city, the Arsenal had a “government called” Eccellentissima Banca formed by political-administrative magistracy (Provveditori all’Arsenale (Superintendents of the Ar-senal)), technical-operative (Patroni all’Arsenale (Patrons of the Arsenal)). The personnel was or-ganised in a complex, but functional hierarchy: from the Admiral, to the Soprastanti (Supervisors), from the Proti (Experts), to the Chiefs, from the Appontadori (Timers), to the Despontadori (Timers ) etc., up to the simple Arsenalotto (Arsenal workers). The administration did not only organise the work of an enormous number of men, but provided for the supply of raw materials up to defining, taking care of, and strictly protecting the wooded areas (Boschi di San Marco (Woods of St. Mark) that guaranteed the planking, masts, and oars of the ships belonging to the Most Serene Republic of Venice, showing an amazing program-ming and far-sightedness ability. |
