The Crew for the Jesolo International Sand Sculpture Festival 2005 "Hollywood"
   After all the design and prep work, the Sultans Of Sand crew of carvers from around the planet finally arrives in Venice. This year we feature the work of several veterans on the team, and a couple of old friends recruited to work as 'Associate Sultanates' for the first time. The total team of twenty represents nine countries.
 In alphabetical order the featured carvers are:
Mark Anderson- United Kingdom;  Lars Borst- The Hague, Netherlands; Peter Busch Jensen- Copenhagen, Denmark; Katsuhiku Chaen- Japan; Alexie Dyakov-.Moscow, Russia; Damon Farmer -Kentucky, U.S.A.;  Marjon Katerberg- Amsterdam, Holland; Vladimir Kuraev - Moscow Russia; Alan Matsumoto, Canada by way of Virginia; Radek Zivney- Czech Republic.
Conceptual Designer and Director ~Rich Varano
With as broad a theme such as Hollywood, there were many choices of how to render the show. The Hollywood theme was ultimately broken into ten elements placed in a sequential order inside the tent. Each sculpture is rendered from about 38 Cubic meters (50 tons) of sand and is 4 meters tall. The carving process took ten days for the eleven artists and the nine helpers.

Once again, the Italian assistants from the Art Academy in Venice proved most valuable to have working with us.
Enthusiastic and able, they did everything from tote forms and shovel sand, to packing, sculpting, spraying, and fine tuning the pieces. GRAZIE RAGGAZI !
