A sand sculpture exhibition  by Sultans Of Sand Worldwide for the city of Jesolo, Italy

The City of Jesolo has endeavored to grow this event each year, and has met that goal consistently. Not only is this the biggest event in size and scope in the history of this event, but it is also the largest and most successful sand sculpture event in Italy. It remains a jewel in the crown of pro sand sculpture tour events worldwide.

Held annually each June, this year marks a change that allows for the finished works to remain on display for a greater period of time than ever before.    nicolanfriend.jpg (673778 bytes)

Thanks to the addition of a grand tent that covers the whole site,  guests of the exhibition may now see the works on display for a few weeks, until July 13, 2003.

Another change is that we now involve art students from the academy of art in Venice as helpers. artstuds.jpg (867046 bytes)

In exchange for the knowledge of sand sculpting they glean, they are useful in ways handy to the artists. Each artist employs one art student in tasks ranging from sculpting and brushing, cleaning or spraying the sand, to help in removing the wooden forms utilized in the engineering aspect of the pound ups.

It takes one to two weeks for the site preparation and engineering. As usual, the pound ups for the sculptures are all done in advance of the artists arrival.

The Sultans Of Sand fielded a crew of ten artists from seven countries to complete a large three sided centerpiece and the surrounding nine solo sculptures, to (ostensibly) reflect the overall event theme of the Ancient Roman Empire.

Artists stay at the event hotel the Hotel Corallo

The event has turned more to an exhibition as opposed to a  Masters Contest as per the Directors preference. The artists employed by the Sultans Of Sand, all work very hard, so they are all compensated fairly for their good efforts instead of just being in the hunt for a cash prize. The event is still juried however, and the public gets to pick their favorite as well. But all prizes are for medals only.

The photographic Exhibition shows how the entire event was structured and executed, as well as shows highlights from past years editions of the event and other sand sculpture events the city has hosted.

As ever, the event is a natural media hook.

This year it was covered by all the local and national stations for radio and TV, as well as the print media outlets. It is also being featured on the Italian Disney Channel.
