JUDGES, JUDGING and CRITERIA:
The same judging format will be used as was in place last year.
There was a good result last year as evidenced by the fact that there were
no complaints made to the director last year regarding this aspect. It
was well publicized that any complaints or concerns should be addressed to
the director. This holds true again this year for ANY aspect
of the event.
The contest will be judged by a jury panel of no less than six, but not more than twelve persons. These persons will not have practical sand sculpture experience, but some of them may have acted as judges last year. The jury panel will be mostly artists from other mediums. A minor portion of the panel will not be of the visual arts environment at all. This is by design.
The judges and the artists will be given the criteria outlined below to be used as SUGGESTIONS ONLY in both helping the artists design pieces (IF THEY SO CHOOSE) and to help the judges to reach their decisions on how to rank the entire field (IF THEY FEEL THEY NEED IT). Please understand that this criteria is not mandatory for either the sculptors OR the judges to use at all. It is simply offered as a reference guideline that the judges MAY refer to for the purpose of helping to objectify what are sure to be some close calls in the final placing of the top, mid and low range. For the artist as well, this criteria is provided as only a general suggestion of a direction to pursue in designing and executing the sculptures.
THE CRITERIA SUGGESTIONS:
Sample Questions the judges MAY ask of themselves as an
aid to determine the rankings or to help compare the sculptures to each
other. These are also only suggestions. The judges may also put any of
the criteria suggestions into this question format. Or they may devise
similar types of questions of their own:
Which sculpture is executed the best?
Which sculpture has the most original theme?
Which sculpture do you like best?
Which sculpture has strongest overall impact?
Which sculpture displays greatest craftsmanship/skill?
Which sculpture exhibits the most detail ?
Which sculpture appears to push the media to the its limit?
Which sculpture exhibits the most artistic merit?
Which sculpture expresses quality to you?
It is hoped that the judges will consider as many aspects as possible,
and include as much information as they are able to in their overall evaluations
of each sculpture.
GROUP CARVE:
There is no mandatory group carve. There is a display piece (Demo)
being created in advance of the contest on Thursday. If competing
professionals would like to work on the display sculpture on Thursday,
they may arrive Wednesday and their room and lunch will be provided. Contact
Rich Varano for details.
