We are coming up on the halfway point of the show and all contestants are busy creating amazing designs. From cowboys and indians to wolves, masked dancers and even the pope.
Mother nature throws us a curve ball. Due to the naturally shifting tidal sand and a beach renourishment project, we have found that the water drains very rapidly this year, causing the pound ups to be soft masses, and not the hard packed blocks we are used to.. Most carvers have already had to slightly alter their designs. Alexi alone, has come up with an entirely different theme. Now, a family of bears will be seen at his plot instead of angels.
Working within the bounds of the medium is of course, much of the challenge in sand sculpting.

1. Damon Farmer, USA
Damon carves a hand to hand battle between characters of the American old west.

2. Alexi Diakov, Russia
Alexi confers with audience members after just completing his second design pound up.

3. Alessandro Buonapane, Italy
Alessandro continues his castle theme and is really pushing the envelope structurally with his pound up.

4. Baldrick, Holland
Baldrick renders the classic statue of David.

5. Marika Tormikoski, Finland
Marika progresses well with her wolves.

6. Dale Murdoch, France
Dale is looking strong with his Carnival dancers, and has had no problems with the material.

7. John Gowdy, USA
John works on the Pope version 2.0 -It is already a big hit with the crowd.

8. Niels Vegter, Holland
Niels is unflappable and works with a steady cadence on his "machine".
