Demo sculptures:.
-
Designs for sculptures can be original ideas or sculptures that fit the
theme from established sources. However, no copyrights may be infringed
upon. The expression of nudity is not prohibited, but the artists will
bear in mind the family nature of the event in general. The artists shall
design sculptures that would appeal to a large cross section of the viewing
public. Realism and representational works are what we are looking for
in the demo. In the contest the artists are free to express whatever they
wish so long as it is deemed appropriate by the CDM administrators. Check
with the director if you have concerns about any aspect of this.
-
The Director will work closely with the artists to assure a certain continuity
and to avoid any excessive repetition of a particular theme or element
in both the demo and the contest. A guideline and outline of the demo sculpture
is provided below, as well as some suggestions for design ideas. No particular
scale will be set, but we do want to understand basically where you are
going with your design and what you will be creating, in advance. Please
provide a brief description and a visual reference (sketch or photo of
a moquette) before arriving. This is for reference of the administrators
and for use in pre publicity and event program/brochure. It can be quite
general.
-
The theme will be the fantasy genre that includes A big fantasy castle
that Rich will work on high on the demo pile, and relatively centered.
A rocky landscape will develop down the demo, and the other eight artists
will each create a scene in the pile around the rest of the demo. The pound
ups are done in advance of the artists arrival.
-
Demo work will begin on June 20, and be completed on the evening of June
23.
-
*
All pound-ups will be done
in advance. Before the artists arrive.
-
Your pre pounded up configuration is: starting at the bottom, a pad of
sand (sand base) approximately 1m tall, and roughly 4m-5m square. The forms
sizes are: Two square wooden boxes, and three round plastic rings in graduating
sizes from large to small. (for each sculptor) Large box" 3.5 m x 3.5m.
Small box: 2.5 m x 2.5m. Both wooden Boxes are approximately .5m tall.
The rings are: (all sizes approximate) Large = 2m across. Medium
= 1.5m across. Small = 1m across. All the round plastic ring forms are
21 inches tall.
-
You may re-use forms as you take them off to create more pounds ups yourself,
but only hand tampers are allowed to compact them due to vibrations.
-
An equal distribution of space and sand is planned for, but if you want
to go bigger than what the above form specifications allow for, please
inform us in advance, and you will be accommodated.
-
The demo work schedule is (on site by) 8:15 AM to 6:00 PM each day. One,
two-hour break will be accorded each day for lunch.
-
Artists are required to spray generous amounts of sealer on the sculptures
AS they are developed.
-
Depending on the scope of your demo piece or how fast you complete
it, you may be asked to work on other sculptures off the CDM beach site
as well. All artists are expected to sculpt during all scheduled hours
and on all scheduled days.
-
Artists are requested to wear event identification and event clothing (if
provided).
-
All demo sculptures on the CDM beach site will be backed up (on) to the
larger demo pile behind, where the castle element and rock craig/cliffs
are being developed, so the back of your demo sculpture will not be entirely
visible to the public. (people can't walk behind it, but they may see the
back from different angles.
-
Please plan to integrate your demo sculpture in a manner that is conducive
with the larger demo behind you. Also tie in with the neighbors on both
your right and left sides. Some on-the-spot collaboration and cooperation
will be required for this. We want the entire demo pile to be completed
all the way down. and all the way around, You are a part of the whole.
OFF (FREE) DAY: JUNE 24
Contest sculptures:
-
Plot sizes are approximately 5m x 5m. These are pre determined spaces to
fit the walkway layout and tent spacing.
-
The pound-ups are done in advance before you arrive. The size and shape
is all wooden forms. Symmetrical pyramids.
-
The tallest point of your sculpture should not be more than 5m at the center
of your plot. (due to the tent)
-
Tents will be removed prior to judging. Tents will be removed in numerical
sequence. You need to be aware that the tents will be removed either from
the front or back, (your call) for the center plots, and front, back or
side for the corner plots (your call). Once on the site, after you have
drawn for plots, you need to plan for how your finished sculpture will
fit the space, and keep in mind how the tent will be removed. Including
planning time to repair footmarks if they are in the sculpture line of
your work.
-
You may not have more sand, but you can put sand out of your plot
(but only to the rear of the sculpture).
-
No power equipment is allowed. Shovels and tampers are provided as well
as all other tools besides your own carving tools, but you may provide
your own laboring tools, -such as tampers and shovels also, if you wish.
-
You are allowed to reuse your forms if you wish to make more pound-ups
on your own.
-
If you are doing multiple pound ups over multiple days, it is requested
that you respect the integrity of your neighbors sculpture by minimizing
any vibration trauma, whenever possible.
-
Water: You can use the hose in any way you wish. There will be one hose
for every two sculptors to share.
-
Rules: Only the artist is allowed in the plot, except for event administrators
and their assigns. Another exception: You may have any help you wish in
removing forms. These persons may be assisting the artists in setting or
removing forms only. Only sand and water may be used. You must seal your
pieces well with the sealer provided to you, but only on finished pieces
that are in place. No importing of sealed pieces or advance mixing of glue
in the sand for structural advantage is allowed. All sand must be hand
worked. Small shaped molds, stamps or stencils are allowed as tools if
the sand is somehow altered by hand after the item is used. No finished
mold process or design stamps that do not require any other manipulation
are permitted. No internal supports, structures or armatures are permitted.
No decorative items, natural or man made, are permitted. No flex time is
available. You may only work during set hours. You are expected to be on
site during set hours. Medical necessity may bear exception to the flex
time rule. Penalties for infractions may range from loss of available time
to disqualification. Disqualification may result in loss of all benefits
to the artist.
-
All decisions of the CDM producer and director are final.
-
Judging: The mode and type of judging has not yet been determined.
This is the preliminary format and all the details
that are currently available. If you wish to be included in this event,
please confirm your response via Email
to the director by June 5, 2002. You need to set your travel
arrangement with the producer to insure you will be reimbursed for your
ticket. You will be required to sign an artist release form granting the
administrators of CDM rights to the use of images of yourself or your likeness
and the work you create at/for CDM.
