My good friend Katsuhiko comes from Minami Satsuma.
A very lovely little city in the mountainous region of the southernmost portion
of Hunshu Island, Japan. There the beaches are pristine and undeveloped, and
really good for sand sculpting. Katsu has been sculpting with the Sultans
Of Sand for a number of years, and does very fine work. He also directs what
is the finest sand sculpture show I have seen in all of Asia. The Sand &
Flower festival which this year, celebrated its 20th anniversary. A huge production
that gets over 100.000 visitors through the gates in just five days. The
people who volunteer in organizing and working at that event are some of
the nicest people you could ever hope to meet anywhere. See the beautiful
sand show Katsu directs: Sand & Flower Festival

The Buffalo Hunter
by Katsuhiko Chaen Minami Satsuma, Japan Photo By Jorge Wiegand
One of the greatest images of the old west is that
of the Indian, hunting the great buffalo. A particular and sacred thing, the
buffalo and the hunting of it, was revered by the indians as one of the "Great
Spirit's" most special gifts. For the Native American, no part of the animal
was wasted. But when the white trappers and later, the settlers came, the
animal was killed off to near extinction, due to the great waste of only
taking the fur (hide) and tongue. By far the greatest slaughter was
the few decades between 1830 & 1860. From an estimated 60 million to
only a few hundred by the turn of the century, today buffalo are farm raised
in some areas of the west. Currently in all public and private herds there
are only about 150,000 buffalo on the American continent
