Dimensions for each of the eight levels,
for all three sizes of poundups
NOTE: All poundups are four meters tall.
Each pounndup makes two sculptures, divided Lengthwise. All
options (above and below) allow for a free flowing traffic pattern. These
floor plans designs are specifically not intended as a one-way directional
flow of traffic. This will insure that viewers must walk around a lot to
see everything, and help avoid "bottleneck" backup on the walkway during
peak traffic times. The above is the maximum size we can go get a good poundup
construction with the size crew and amount of labor days we have. This
will make for better poundups in the carving phase and alleviate the (potentially
disastrous) problems we had last summer, of poor (dry) poundups.
Last year we did two whacks per level and barely had time
to finish. This year we must do a minimum of three whacks per form level,
so we will still be pressed for time, even with the smaller show.
Last year's floor plan was a little too tight anyway, and
these designs will allow for a less cramped, and more comfortable viewing
experience..

Optional layouts (Below -click to enlarge)
The options below are all various arrangements
of poundups for a smaller volume of sand than the above proposed layout.
Any of the ones below would be a better choice that the above design
because with the smaller project we can be sure to have more time in the
labor phase to ensure the best chance for structural integrity of the poundups.
We were very lucky last year that with all the collapses we had as we removed
forms that we did not loose a lot of work already completed. The real danger
of loosing already carved work from poor poundups (due to being rushed because
there are so many and too much volume) is a serious matter.
Obviously, if we cannot afford a bigger labor crew or more
labor days, we must cut back on the scope of the work to ensure a good (structural
integrity) poundup process.
In any case, I have already arranged to bring in an additional
field engineer (Brad Goll) from my crew to assist in the supervision of
the labor process with John and Mark.

I also have a number of other options in
the files, but they are just other rearrangements of these poundups.
I have not done the volume calculations yet,
because I wanted to submit this for the producer's review as soon as possible.
But I think (hope) the proposed layout is a little less volume than last
year. The optional ones will be a little less that the proposed one.
I only chose the proposed one as the highlight because I thought the
producers would want the bigger choice.
I do not see a good way to allow the public inside the tent until
the carving is complete
A people's Choice contest can be run for the entire length of the
show, after the show opens and ending the weekend that you close the show.
There will be 18 sculptures. Half can be China Theme, and half
can be Olympics theme. These themes on the poundups can be arranged several
different ways, that we can determine later.
