The Sand Nativity
For the sixth year in a row, the Sultans
Of Sand Worldwide will field an international team of ten of the best
sand sculptors in the world to create a sand nativity display for the City
of Jesolo, in Venice county, Italy.
This year it will be a 6 meter tall, octagonal shaped sand
sculpture of about 900 tons. The large mass is divided into eight vignettes
of the traditional nativity story. It will be situated on the city square
at Piazza Marconi, on the Jesolo lido, inside a transparent,
gas heated tent measuring 19 x 20 meters. This tent will have a raised
and carpeted floor, a sound system for music and announcements, a dynamic
colored light show, and plants & other decor, as well as a photo gallery
with images of how the show was put together; the sculptures in progress,
and a selection of images from past editions of this fine show. There will
also be a merchandising area where postcards, calendars and other sand sculpture
related items will be on sale. The show is open free to the public from 10
AM to 10 PM daily, December 08, 2007 through January 13, 2008
There is a national registry of nativity
displays in Italy, and we made it into the the top ten, the second year we
installed a nativity sand sculpture here. Another highlight was in 2005 when
we also received special recognition for our work, from the Pope.
There are also two other smaller sculptures
(3.5 meters tall each) featured in the tent: The Peace keepers series part
II "Mahatma Gandhi " (Last year it was a portrait of the late Pope
John Paul II)
Additionally, there will be a Fantasy Sand Castle as
a teaser promo for the 2008 Jesolo international sand festival to be held
next summer.
The engineering and prep work runs November 16 - 25. And
the carving is November 26- December 04. The decor, flooring, lighting and
sound system will be put in December 05 - 08. With the grand opening at
6:00PM on December 08.
