| Vladimir Kuraev.
University of Moscow 1984. Vladimir
is an art professor, and director of the department
of sculpture of the college (MAXL, RAH) where he himself graduated
with honors in 1984. Since 1996 he participated in several international competitions of sand, snow and ice sculptures. And has a lot of awards in all disciplines. He also paints and does commercial sculpture in permanent mediums as well. Vladimir is a member of the Artists Association of Russia (soyuz khydojnikov rossia). Vladimir has a penchant for using symbolism in his work., and will gladly stylize figures if given half a chance, even though he has a superb mastery of both human and animal anatomy. A member of the Sultans Of Sand 'Russian Syndicate' (a strong contingency of the eurasian carvers engaged by the company each year) for about the last decade or so, Vladimir is well ensconced as a member of the Jesolo crews in both winter and summer. For which the organizers are very glad. We are always delighted when he brings his lovely wife Marina and adorable daughter Katya with him to Jesolo in the summer. (One can easily imagine Katya carving alongside her dad one of these days) Vladimir is also a bit reserved and quite. One could attribute this to stoicism, but I suspect that it may more accurately be due to the fact that his english language skills are not nearly as developed as his artistic abilities. When I first met Vladimir, at a sand show in Quebec City back in the mid 90's he had really no english at all, and relied on a translator to communicate. But now, he speaks english far better than I speak Russian. (I have a total of three Russian words under my belt so far) He also plays the guitar quite well too. Sometimes he can be found jamming at the base of the sand pile with whoever else happens to be around with an instrument as well. See his web site: www.artconcern.ru |
