Rich's Bio

Rich Varano is the owner and managing director of Varano Sand  Sculpture Company LLC. aka "the Sultans Of Sand Worldwide."  A global sand sculpture services company established in the early 1980's.
He began sculpting sand  with his dad frank, as a hobby at the age of six in 1964.  Later, he would occasionally do day pieces at his local beach for tips during his school years, but he really got into sand sculpting professionally when he was 25 years old.
As you can see from this entire website, Rich is able to engage the talents of a large number of the worlds finest sand carvers working in this unique field all over the globe today. Coordinating them to achieve monumental works in sand which retain a very high quality quotient compared to the way many of the other big sand shows are being done by some other sand event organizers elsewhere. For this fortunate occurrence, he also credits the producers of the Jesolo event for giving him as the artistic director, the latitude required to really pull this off  well.
Everywhere  pro sand sculpting is being done today, it is always a case of the tradeoff  between the amount of sand that needs to be carved, and the available man hours in which to render whatever the particular designs are for any given show. In general, more time with less volume of sand, yields the opportunity for a higher quality of finished work than if there is a more limited amount of time to carve the same amount of sand (Or in worse cases yet, even more sand).
Many of these wonderful artists working on the various crews, who live in far flung locations on all continents, have become good friends over the years
. Varano is grateful to every one of them for all the fantastic contributions they have made toward Varano Sand Sculpture company LLC sanctioned events being recognized as of the very finest shows of their kind, anywhere in the world. There are a number of other high quality and reputable sand companies out there doing good work too, but it is real validation to have the great carvers that do work for this company make adjustments to their otherwise busy schedules to be able to participate in the events directed by Varano. He is also very thankful for this and does not take it for granted. And that is also the main reason  why he has given his company, -which uses the many varied talents of so many great international artists from around the globe, the Nom de Plume " The Sultans Of Sand Worldwide." He hopes it is well understood that this speaks to these group efforts in providing such great work to the general public being more about the collective as opposed to being about any one individual.
