As ever, we start with the beach being graded smooth, and a big circus style tent erected over the event site. We then install a temporary well point water pump. Then we have lots of clean (sifted) sand brought in with heavy equipment: A scoop shovel/excavator helps the laborers to lift the equipment up and  fill the one-half meter tall wooden forms a layer at a time with our custom sand as it is mixed with water. Each successive layer is packed with the gas powered machines called "Whacker Packers"  This filling of the forms and compacting it is a slow process, but an important aspect  It is crucial to make very solid and dense blocks of sand from which, the artists carve their masterpieces. The finished  "Pound-Ups" as they are called, are ready for the artists to remove the interlocking forms one level at a time from the top down in order to sculpt the compacted sand within.

A Single Pound-Up
The labor process to prepare the pound-ups takes about a week.

After the prep work, the Sultans Of Sand crew of carvers arrives from around the planet. This year we feature the work of several veterans on the team, and a few old friends recruited to work as associate Sultanates for the first time. The total team of twenty represents nine countries. In alphabetical order they are:
Mark Anderson of the United Kingdom;  Lars Borst- The Hague, Netherlands; Peter Busch Jensen of Copenhagen, Denmark; Katsuhiku Chaen  from Japan; Alexie Dyakov-. Moscow, Russia; Damon Farmer Kentucky, U.S.A.; Marjon Katerberg from Amsterdam, Holland; Vladimir Kuraev - Moscow Russia; Alan Matsumoto, Canadian by way of Virginia; Radek Zivney from the Czech Republic.
Conceptual designer and director Rich Varano
The Hollywood theme was broken into ten elements placed in a sequential order inside the tent. Each sculpture is rendered from about 38 Cubic meters of sand and is four meters tall The carving process takes ten days for the eleven artists and the eight helpers.

Once again, the Italian assistants from the Art Academy in Venice proved most valuable to have working with us.
Enthusiastic and able, they did everything from tote forms and shovel sand, to packing, sculpting, spraying, and fine tuning the pieces. GRAZIE RAGGAZI !
