The Field Preparation Processes
As ever, we start with the
beach being graded smooth, and a big circus style tent erected over the event
site. We then install a temporary well point water pump. Then we have lots
of clean (sifted) sand brought in with heavy equipment: A scoop
shovel/excavator helps the laborers
to lift the equipment up and fill the one-half meter tall
wooden forms a layer
at a time with our custom sand as it is mixed with water. Each successive
layer is packed with the gas powered machines called "Whacker Packers" This
filling of the forms and compacting it is a slow process, but an important
aspect. It is crucial to make very solid and dense blocks of sand
from which the artists carve their masterpieces. These finished "Pound-Ups" as they are called,
are then ready for the artists to remove the interlocking forms one level
at a time from the top down in order to sculpt the compacted sand within.
The labor process to prepare all of the
pound-ups takes about a week.
