JESOLO
SCULTURE DI SABBIA IX -
VISIONS
OF AFRICA
THE SUN SETTING ON CETSHWAYO –
LAST KING OF THE
ZULUS
by Mark Anderson ~Weymouth, England
<> The
year 1879
was a bad time to be the king of Zulu land due to the desire of the
British
Empire to expand in Africa and thus there was the Zulu war.>
<>The sculpture
features a portrait of the King, Ka Mpandi Cetshwayo, British colonial
soldiers, and the rocky tor known as Isandlwana, the site of
Cetshwayo’s
greatest victory over the British. The British eventually won the war
and
Cetshwayo was taken to Great Britain where he remained until the queen
eventually returned his land to him. But by that time his influence was
no
longer strong and the country was permanently divided.>
There
are
numerous accounts of this historic battle, such as the book “Brave
Men’s
Blood” by Ian Knight and the film “ZULU”
starring Michael Cain.
