A large part of African social life takes place in the shade of the village tree. People gather there to prepare food, share news or listen to the traditional storyteller. A popular story is about how the tortoise got the seams on its shell. Legend says that one day all the animals were climbing the great Liana tree, but the squirrel cut the rope and all the animals came tumbling down on top of the tortoise breaking it's shell, which the ant glued back together.
